Wingspan is 1 - 1 1/2 inches.

Dun Skipper
Black Dash (very rare and northern)


Habitat:
Moist woodland edges, wet savannas, edges of marshes and rivers, bogs, swamps and power line clearings.

Range/Abundance:
Uncommon to rare in the piedmont and mountains. Rare to very rare in the coastal plain. More common in the northern portion of the region. Don't let the map below lead you into thinking this is a commonly found species in the region.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from Late May until late September in two broods with a gap between broods.

Larval Host Plants:
Panic grasses including Deertongue Grass Panicum clandestinum and P. dichotomum

Comments:
This is another difficult skipper species to identify especially when worn. Look for the pale smudge mark in the center on the hindwing on a brown skipper.
