Black Dash
Euphyes conspicua

Size:
Wingspan is 1 1/4 - 1 5/8 inches.

Similar Species:

Southern Broken Dash
Northern Broken Dash

Habitat:
Wet meadows, bogs, marshes and marshy stream banks with sedges.

Range/Abundance:
This is a northern wetland skipper that is very rare in WV and VA. Not found in NC or SC.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from late June until late July in a single brood.

Larval Host Plants:
Sedges such as Uptight Sedge Carex stricta

Comments:
This is a fast flier that likes to perch on tall vegetation usually in very damp places. The range of Southern Broken Dash does not over lap with Black Dash so there shouldn't be any confusion between the species. Northern Broken Dash is a pale brown below and not reddish like the Black Dash.

All photos were taken in Westchester Co., NY on July 10, 2003.
