Size:
Wingspan is 3/4 - 1 1/8 inches.

Similar Species:

Spring Azure
Eastern Tailed-Blue
Appalachian Azure (mountains only)

Habitat:
Open areas, power line cuts, disturbed areas and grassy fields more widespread than the other azures.

Range/Abundance:
Common in the entire region.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from late April until late September in at least three broods.

Larval Host Plants:
A wide variety of hosts including both woody species and herbs.

Comments:
Summer Azure is found throughout summer. Usually Spring Azures have finished flying when the Summer Azures emerge. In the mountains during spring it could be confused with Appalachian Azures which are slightly larger.

Summer Azures tend to fly at head height or above, where as Eastern Tailed-Blues tend fly closer to the ground.

Summer Azure, Celastrina neglecta
You need to be an expert on azures to tell Summer Azure from the other azures in spring. From late spring on, these are the only azures flying making identification easy.

Even though this mated pair was found nearly two months earlier than normal, the missing chip in the forewing shows this pair to be Summer Azures. The missing chip shows the upperside color for Summer Azure.
