Meadow Fritillary
Boloria bellona

Size:
Wingspan is 1 1/4 - 1 7/8 inches.

Similar Species:

Silver-bordered Fritillary which has dark borders on the wings from above.

Habitat:
Open fields, meadows, weedy fields, pastures and roadsides in the mountains mainly. Sometimes found in the foothills.

Range/Abundance:
Fairly common in the northern mountains and uncommon in the central and southern mountains.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from April until mid October with three broods and gaps between broods.

Larval Host Plants:
Violets Viola spp.

Comments:
This is a small low-flying fritillary unlike most of the other larger fritillaries. The range of this species is expanding southward.
