Bog Copper
Lycaena epixanthe

Size:
Wingspan is 7/8 - 1 inch.

Similar Species:

American Copper (not found in bogs)

Habitat:
Cranberry Bogs.

Range/Abundance:
Very rare. Found only in one county in WV. Not recorded in NC, SC and VA.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from early July until early August in a single brood.

Larval Host Plants:
Cranberry Vaccinium macrocarpum.

Comments:
Bog Copper is the smallest copper. The small size and the difficult to access habitat make it very hard to find. Our region has only a few cranberry bogs in WV. Commercial cranberry farms use pesticides so you would not likely find Bog Copper in the acid bogs at a farm.
