Southern Pearly-eye
Northern Pearly-eye
Habitat:
Bottomlands in shady areas with Cane nearby. Partly shaded trails or roads
along bay forests or wet maritime forests.
Range/Abundance:
Uncommon in the sandhills and coastal
plain and rare in the piedmont.
Flight Period:
Adults fly from mid April until mid September in two broods with a gap
between broods.
Larval Host Plants:
Cane Arundinaria
Comments:
In the coastal plain likely
you would encounter both Creole and Southern Pearly-eyes as they use the
same habitat. Once you learn the "knuckle" on the forewing marks,
this becomes much easier to identify. Creole also has orange and black
on the antennal tips where Southern Pearly-eye
has all orange antennal tips.
