Large Orange Sulphur

Size:
Wingspan is 2 3/4 - 3 3/8 inches.

Similar Species:
Orange-barred Sulphur
Cloudless Sulphur

Habitat:
Tropical habitats, open areas, meadows, pastures, roadsides and gardens.

Range/Abundance:
Accidental or stray. A resident of southern FL that migrates into the region. Reported to have been found north of the region several times.

Flight Period:
Adults fly in late summer in our region.

Larval Host Plants:
The pea family including Pithecellobium and Inga spp.

Comments:
This large sulphur looks a lot like the common Cloudless Sulphur in flight, it does show a hint of orange.

When I saw my first Large Orange Sulphurs in the Florida Keys, every last one flew by at eye level or higher and never landed. Getting a positive identification on the wing is possible, but a perched look is recommended
