Wingspan is 1 1/8 - 1 1/2 inches.
Similar Species:
Zabulon Skipper
Habitat:
Woodland edges, forest roads, brushy fields and openings near woods. All
in high elevations in the region.
Range/Abundance:
Uncommon in the western mountains,
more common in the mountains of WV and VA.
Flight Period:
Adults fly from early May until mid July in a single brood.
Larval Host Plants:
Grasses including panic grasses Panicum and bluegrasses Poa.
Comments:
During late spring and early summer this species could be confused with
the much more common and wide spread
Zabulon Skipper which is slightly smaller and uses the same type habitat.
In our region there is another variation called form "Pocahontas"
as shown at right. This form might have been named because of Pocahontas
Co., WV. I found the "Pocahontas" form to be very common there.
