Wingspan is 7/8 - 1 1/4 inches.

Similar Species:

Common Checkered Skipper

Habitat:
Open to semi-open shale slopes, grassy slopes,shale barrens and hillsides near woodlands.

Range/Abundance:
Rare northern species found in the mountains in the spring when butterflying is very difficult to do in the mountains.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from mid April until mid May in a single brood.

Larval Host Plants:
Cinquefoil, Potentilla canadensis

Comments:
Possibly over looked due to cold weather during its flight period.

There is a possibility I might have seen this species in Avery Co., NC on May 11, 2000 along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
