Size:
Wingspan is 2 - 2 1/2 inches.

Similar Species:
None.

Habitat:
Open fields, open scrub, gardens, woodland edges and coastal areas.

Range/Abundance:
Very common in the southern coastal plain, uncommon to rare in the northern coastal plain, eastern piedmont and mountains. There are very few records in VA and no records in WV.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from May until mid December in two or three broods. Usually Gulf Fritillary is not seen until late summer in most of the region.

Larval Host Plants:
Passion vines Passiflora spp.,
Maypop Passiflora incarnata in the Carolinas.

Comments:
This is a southern migrant that works its way northward up the coast and northwestward towards Asheville NC.
