Wingspan is 2 - 2 3/4 inches.

Similar Species:

Aphrodite Fritillary
Great Spangled Fritillary

Habitat:
High elevation meadows, pastures, roadsides, woodland edges and wet meadows.

Range/Abundance:
Common in the higher elevation mountains of VA, WV. No known records for NC and SC.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from June until late September in a single brood.

Larval Host Plants:
Violets Viola spp.
Blue Violet Viola papilionacea, Canada Violet V. canadensis, Downy Wood Violet V. soraria, Sweet White Violet V. blanda, Smooth Yellow Violet V. pennsylvanica and Striped Violet V. striata

Comments:
This is one of the more difficult fritillaries to identify in the Appalachian Mountains. Look for it at high elevations in Canaan Valley, Dolly Sods and Spruce Knob in WV.
