'Seminole' Texan Crescent

Size:
Wingspan is 1 1/4 - 1 3/4 inches.

Similar Species:

None in the region.

Habitat:
Swampy woods and bottom lands along rivers and streams.

Range/Abundance:
Very rare in NC, uncommon in SC. Not reported in VA or WV. In SC check along the swamps near the Conagree, Santee and Wateree Rivers. In NC check along the SC border and near the Waccamaw River.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from April until late October in three broods with gaps between broods.

Larval Host Plants:
Water-willow Justicia spp.and plants of the Acanthus family including dicliptera.

Comments:
This crescent is very slow flying and the white median band on the upper side of the hindwing can be seen even in flight. This white band makes this crescent the region's easiest to identify.
