Mitchell's Satyr
Neonympha mitchellii

Size:
Wingspan is 1 3/8 - 1 3/4 inches.

Similar Species:

Georgia Satyr

Habitat:
Wet sedgey bogs and meadows. Old pastures too wet to mow, bomb craters at Fort Bragg (off limits to the public).

Range/Abundance:
Very rare in the sandhills of NC.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from late May until August in two broods with a gap between broods. At the location I took these photos, only one brood is reported from late June until late July.

Larval Host Plants:
Sedges (Carex spp.)

Comments:
Federally endangered and off limits at Fort Bragg in NC. I tried to get on to the Fort Bragg site for photos back in the late 1990s and never received an answer to my e mails.

In the past few years several new colonies of Mitchell's Satyr on private property have been located in the region. Please don't ask for the locations as I've sworn to keep the locations a secret and can't reveal a thing.

These photos were taken on July 4, 2003 at an undisclosed location.
