Size:
Wingspan is 1 1/3 - 1 1/2 inches.

Similar Species:

None in the region.

Habitat:
Open area, fields, meadows, moist grasslands at higher elevations.

Range/Abundance:
Locally common at only one location Spruce Knob Lake in WV. This colony was planted there several years back.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from mid June until early August in a single brood. A second brood might be possible.

Larval Host Plants:
Grasses and rushes.

Comments:
This species has colonized in the northeastern US since the 1960 and is moving southward.

Common Ringlets can be found in large numbers. When I found the colony at Spruce Knob Lake, I expected to find a handful at best, not over a thousand of them!

The top three photos were taken at Spruce Knob Lake in Randolph Co., WV on June 24, 2003. The bottom photo was taken at the same location as above on July 07, 2003.
