Size:
Wingspan is 1 7/8 - 2 7/8 inches.

Similar Species:

None.

Habitat:
Open areas, fields, grassy meadows, dunes, savannas and wooded edges.

Range/Abundance:
Common to uncommon in most of the region.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from late May until late October in a single brood.

Larval Host Plants:
Grasses including Purpletop Tridens flavus.

Comments:
They do nectar flowers as shown at right on Mountain Mint. This species seems to be more wide spread along the coastal plain than in the mountains, although large numbers can be found at times in the mountains.

The top and second photos were taken at Doughton Park in Allegheny Co., NC on July 28, 2002. The third photo was taken in Westchester Co., NY on July 10, 2003. The bottom photo was taken in Croatan National Forest during August of 2001.
