Size:
Wingspan is 1 - 1 1/4 inches.

Similar Species:

None
in the region.

Habitat:
Look in the mountains along wooded roadsides and trails in hardwood forests. Also cove forests, moist woodland openings and, dry forests where its host plants grow. Males frequent puddles and damp sand.

Range/Abundance:
Rare or uncommon in the western mountains of NC, SC. Uncommon and a bit more widespread in western VA and most of WV.

Flight Period:
Adults fly from early April until mid June in a single brood.

Larval Host Plants:
Carolina Vetch Vicia caroliniana, Crown Vetch Coronilla varia and Veiny Peavine Lathyrus venosus.

Comments:
These blues can only be found during spring and at high elevations near patches of vetch, their host plant. They are easy to observe once found and tend to open their wings when perched.
